“I am smarter than him.”
The form of the second pronoun in a comparison is determined by the role the pronoun plays with the elided verb in the subordinate clause.
Subject: I am smarter than he (is). If this feels clumsy or formal, don’t elide the verb.
Object: He hates her more than (he hates) me.
