Breakfast
Breakfast is an obvious compound of break and fast. We break our overnight fast with our morning meal. Breakfast is a noun that describes the meal and a verb that describes the eating of the meal.
Anglo-Saxon words for the morning meal were undernmete (mid-morning meal) and morgenmete (morning meal). The verb mete meant to portion out and survives today in the phrase mete out.
