Steppe
A steppe is a treeless plain in a temperate or cold climate. Steppe is usually used to describe the grasslands of Russia and Asia. Similar plains in North America are usually called prairies. In tropical or subtropical climates, such plains are called savannas (no H). The word steppe derives from a Russian word with a similar pronunciation. The etymology of the Russian word is unknown.
