Copyright is not a verb.

Dictionaries lie.

You can’t copyright a work, nor can you place a copyrighted work into the public domain.

Copyright of a work is automatic upon creation of the work. You can’t refuse the copyright of your work, and you can’t prematurely end the term of your copyright.

You can register a work with a national intellectual property office, but registration does not confer copyright, nor does registration prove copyright.

You can transfer the ownership of your copyright to another entity. You can license rights to another entity. The copyright persists until the end of its term.
